Race Recap: California International Marathon 2012

It has taken me nearly a week to get a handle on my race last Sunday at the California International Marathon.  All the runners who lined up at the start knew what they were getting into.  I’m sure everyone else had spent the week before obsessively checking the weather too, thinking that there was still time for the chance of rain to become something less than 100%.  By 6AM on Sunday, standing in the dark at the start with thousands of other equally crazy runners, I knew we’d be running in the rain.  I knew it was likely parts of … Continue reading

Race Recap: Nike Women’s Half Marathon 2012

NWM with Rachel

I’d almost forgotten about this race.  I signed up for the lottery on a whim and was shocked when I got the email that said I’d gotten into the race.  I’m training for CIM (the California International Marathon) in December, so my goal for this race was to use it as a training run.  I wanted to run 10:00 minute/mile (my marathon goal pace) for the whole race and end up at the finish line feeling like running another 13.1 miles was possible. I’d heard some horror stories about this race being incredibly crowded, and the expo did nothing to … Continue reading

Race Recap: 2012 Mermaid Series Alameda Sprint Triathlon

I finished my first triathlon!  I didn’t drown in the Bay.  I didn’t freak out in the middle of the swim and have to be rescued.  I swam 400yds, biked 12 miles, and ran 2.5 miles, all successfully, and I did it in just over 90 minutes.  That’s the short summary, what follows is an (excessively) detailed account of my race. I had packed everything the night before, so I woke up at 4:30 AM to have a cup of coffee and eat some oatmeal with banana and almond butter.  I did a final obsessive check of everything I had … Continue reading

Race Recap: Mermaid East Bay Half Marathon

Mermaid Half Marathon Fremont

So I had nearly forgotten about this race.  I knew I was signed up for it, and I was looking forward to it, but I wasn’t scared or nervous.  I’ve been doing a lot less running, and a lot more cross training lately.  While I remain in search of the elusive sub-2 finish, I knew I wasn’t properly trained to really try for it in this race. The Quarry Lakes Regional Park was absolutely beautiful.  The scenery was amazing, with miles and miles of trails, rolling hills, and people swimming in the quarry.  I’ll be heading back for some more … Continue reading

Race Recap: Walnut Creek 5k

The short version: 24:53!! The long version is significantly longer, but I had to start with my time.  I got my 24, with six seconds to spare.  Race morning was very cold, and I drove over to Walnut Creek with lots of different outfit options.  I found parking easily (something that never gets old coming from Boston), and jogged over to the start line to get the lay of the land.  I was parked only a quarter mile from the start, and there were plenty of porta-potties, but very few people at the 5k start an hour before the race.  … Continue reading

CIM Spectating

cheering at CIM

Sunday morning my alarm went off at 4am.  I grabbed some coffee and toast with peanut butter and packed my bag full of warm clothes, water, moleskin, larabars and gu.  Sounds like any normal race day morning, but I wasn’t the least bit nervous.  I wasn’t running; I was spectating! (thanks for the photo, Jana!) Jana picked me up at 5am, and we headed up to Sacramento.  The drive went by so quickly!  We had a few adventures along the way in search of a gas station and Starbucks, but we finally found both after a brief, but luckily uneventful … Continue reading

Race Recap: Mermaid Run San Francisco 5k

What a gorgeous day for a race.  When I got there at 6:30 it was still chilly and foggy, but the fog burned off and it warmed up just enough to be a perfect running day.  The race started at 8, but I pulled into the parking lot at 6:30, still needing to pick up my bib and not wanting to be stressed out by getting lost or not being able to park.  The parking was nearly a mile away from the race, so I was glad to have plenty of time to park, collect my stuff, and head back … Continue reading

Race Recap: Walnut Festival Run for Education 5k

This weekend I drove out to Walnut Creek to run the Walnut Festival 5k with a bunch of bloggers and twitter buddies.  The multi-talented Aron and Kristin helped organize the race, and I was psyched to go support them and spend the morning running.  I haven’t run a 5k in well over a year, and there’s something I really love about running fast.  My favorite race distance is the half marathon, because it’s not a sufferfest.  13.1 is an achievable distance, but the pace is safely aerobic.  When you race a 5k, you “try not to puke”, “run til your … Continue reading

Race Recap: 2011 See Jane Run Half Marathon

I loved so many parts of this race, except for the actual running of it   See Jane Run is my fourth half marathon.  This wasn’t a goal race for me; it just fit well into my training plan for my A race, which is the Summer Breeze Half Marathon at the San Leandro Marina in August.  Unfortunately, I’d been sick for the ten days before this race.  Going into it, I hoped I’d just be super tapered and ready to run.  This is the first half marathon I’ve done all by myself, without even a spectator for support.  It … Continue reading

Looking Back: A Recap of My First Half Marathon

Right now I’m off running my fourth half marathon, and I thought it would be fun to look back on the first one I ever ran!   So plenty of time has passed now for me to reflect on the half marathon on Sunday. The days between then and now have been packed and crazy, but today was my first day back to running, with an easy four mile recovery run. My legs feel great and rested. But first, back to the race! We picked up our numbers on Saturday and watched the little kids fun runs. They were so … Continue reading
