When I first read the craigslist ad for our current apartment, I was seduced by all sorts of words and phrases, like “dishwasher,” “washer and drier,” and “backyard,” but the kicker was “fruit trees.”  Oh to live in a house with fruit trees in the backyard!  I was sold.  In reality, it was in our price range, conveniently located, and looked nice online.  But wouldn’t you love to rent a place just for the fruit trees? Breakfast Oatmeal Bars with Plum Jam

The homemade snack kick continues!  These oatmeal bars vary from the previous granola bars (chocolate chip pretzel, honey peanut butter pretzel, and coconut chocolate chip) which were all variations on a similar theme.  These bars use flour in addition to the oatmeal, and have a layer of jam in the middle that contributes most of the sweetness. Rustic Plum Tart

The plum trees in our back yard have been positively prolific (and inspiring of alliteration).  We’ve made plum jam (lots and lots) which is worthy of a post all its own.  Frankly, the immensely self-satisfied feeling you get from canning your own jam and hearing the lids vacuum shut could probably make up for the most horrible mistake-filled day at work.  Or maybe that’s just me.
